Filming Plan

We are going to do our last narrative filming session this Sunday so we need to plan what we are bringing.

We are filming in Bechenham Place Park and at Simon's house. In the park we will be filming more narrative shots, showing Simon and Tabitha spending time together. We want a few shots of them in the river, so we will need wellies for the actors and the camera man. In Simon's house we will have shots of Tabitha packing a suitcase, as if she's leaving.

Filming Session 1

Saturday 23rd November (11am-3pm)

Our first filming session was at Beckenham Place Park. We met at Ravensbourne Station, as it is just down the road from the entrance of the park. We were borrowing another Media Studies students personal video camera to film and we had booked out a tripod from our school. We all arrived on time with our props including a notepad, pen, Polaroid camera and film, photo negatives, and a suitcase. However, both Tabitha and I brought a suitacse along with them so we did have one too many! We began filming in the middle of the park to film shots of the characters in the field. We used the suitcase to have shots of the female character walking away from the camera with the suitacse, and standing looking with suitcase at the camera and certain distances away.

We then moved over to the river to film shots there. We used the notepad and pen to film the main character writing lyrics down, showing him writing the song. I had to (with great difficulty may I add) climb up a tree and write in the notepad from high up to get a quality low angle. Then, to film an over the shoulder shot from in the tree, the cameraman had to (with even greater difficulty) climb up the tree higher and be passed the camera to film. These did make great shots so no regrets!

Next up was the photo negative set-up. I had collected photo negatives from The Other Art Fair (Brick Lane) I visited a few weeks earlier and thought they would make some great nostalgic shots. I was clever enough to bring string along too, to attach them to the tree branches - but I forgot to bring a pair of scissors with me. So whilst Ben ran back to his house to get scissors (as he lived 5 minutes away), we filmed some other shots. When he returned, we all set-up the scene and as a result, had a very lovely scene of dangling photo negatives. These made some great shots of the main character handling them and thinking he is seeing the female character when he looks through them.

We moved over to the bridge that crosses the river and filmed for a while there. We used the Polaroid camera to shoot a memory of the main character taking a picture of the main female character which was also effective. When we felt we had substantial shots to begin editing, we called it a day as everyone basically had developed hypothermia and I might've nearly died from the lack of coffee.

Below is Josh and I ensuring times and equipment for filming over text message.

Filming Session 2

Monday 25th November (2pm-3pm)

The four of us in the group got consent to leave school early on this day so we all got the bus back to my house. We whipped up some hot chcolate and coffee to prepare for the cold and set up the camera and it's handheld stabiliser. The tripod was kept at Ben's house as he lived closest. We walked over back to the location and began filming some more footage. Ben quickly got the tripod too. We must've got a few shots of the main character writing and sitting. We also got a couple of establishing shots as the hill we were on made a lovely view of Kent and London Docklands. However, it began to cloud over very quickly and looked as if it were going to rain. We said we would do a few more shots then call it as we didn't want to risk the equipment getting wet. In those 'few shots' we were doing, Josh unfortunately tried to adjust the chest piece that stabilises the camera to yourchest, and broke it off. This was personal equipment of another Media Studies student so we had to replace it immediately. Given this event, we decided to pack away and reschedule. I researched the equipment and found the company it was from and e-mailed them regarding them indiviudal pieces.

Below is the email conversation I had with the company regarding buying the part we needed to replace.

Below is me telling me the group the amount we equally needed to contribute to cover the cost of the new part I had bought.

 Filming Session 3

Sunday 8th December (12am-2pm)

Tabitha couldn't attend this filming session due to a prior commitment. Josh, Ben and I met at Ravensbourne Station at 12am and began filming immediately as I had set up the camera and stabiliser at home. We used the focus pull feature on the stabiliser to get some nice shots of the depth of field changing. We used a small building that is used to keep a generator, which is only about 8ft tall. I climbed on top of it to do some long shots of me throwing the pages of lyrics up in the air. The sun was shining brightly that day so the glint made for really nice contrasting shadow shots. We were getting some really good shots (when Ben wasn't getting his fingers in shot). The lighting was really clear and made for good shadows.

Below is Ben and I discussing about times and equipment via text messaging.

Filming Session 4 (16th December)

Today we were filming in a large hall to film shots of Simon, Ben and Josh performing the song. We began with shots of Simon singing the whole song in different shot types such as mid and close-up. Because all three of us made and recorded the song, we didn't have a problem miming to the song. Because we all know exactly how we performed it in the recording studio, it should match up really well. After these shots, we started to do close ups and mid shots of Ben and Josh playing the whole song on guitars. While filming these shots school staff came in and told us we were not allowed to be there without a teacher supervising us. To fix this problem we went to find our media teacher who came to the hall for a short while and told us we would be fine for the rest of the time.
Next we did wide shots from the hall balcony, again showing Simon Ben and Josh performing on the stage.
We found time ran away with us and decided to carry on the hall shots another time.

Filming Session 5 (9th January)

We were filming in the recording studio where we recorded the song. The shots were of Simon singing the song in the studio. These shots included mid-shot, close-up, side view shots and front shots. This was easy to do as no-one was using the studio. Also, because it was the studio we recorded the song in, it meant that we could play the song through the headphones for Simon to sing along to. The miming is not a problem in our case as the actual singer of the song is Simon, so to get miming done perfectly Simon just had to sing along to the song and it matches up very well.

Digipak Photoshoot (19th January)

Today we did a photoshoot for the photos that will be making the digipak for San Diego EP. We arrived at Beckenham Place Park (the location of the music video shooting) to take pictures for the digipak. We began doing close-ups and mid-shots of me on the hill that is featured in the video. The background was distant so looked nicely out of focus. Then, we headed into the forest to take some photos around the trees and woodland area. These made for some nice long shots and wide shots. As it was a hilly place, we got shots of Simon on the horizon line with the sky behind as a nice background for where the lyrics would be in the digipak. We moved onto the river, and the location of where we shot some of the music video, with the photo negative strung to branches, and used them for some photos too. Then, we will pick the best ones to be featured in the digipak.

Website (22nd January)

Today Simon and Ben are going to start creating the Digi Pack for San Diego.

Me and Josh are continuing with creating the website on Wix. We are going to try and finish adding the social media links, photos and getting the over all layout of the homepage.

This is where me and Josh got to with the website at the end of the lesson. This is a rough layout, we will clean it up after adding editing all the features.

Filming Session 6 (26th January)

Today we had planned to film at Beckenham Place Park to film the remaining narrative shots. Unfortunately, it was raining all day so we were unable to film outside as we couldn’t risk damaging any of the camera equipment.

As we couldn’t go outside we decided to film inside at Simon’s house instead. This worked out as almost an advantage as we realised that there were a lot of narrative shots which would be best suited to being located at Simon’s house. Although there were some shots which we weren’t able to film, we feel like we now have enough narrative footage to work with when editing.

We have now finished filming everything for the narrative sections of the video and we have one more filming session to finish filming the rest of the performance shots.

Tabitha

Website (28th January)

Me and Tabitha have slightly re-arranged the website homepage. We have moved the social media feeds to the side as we thought having a column going all the way down the side would make the site look cleaner. We have replaced the Spotify player with a Soundcloud because there is more music on the Soundcloud for people to listen to.
The plain 'Simon Stirling' text has been replaced with a handwritten version created using a graphics tablet. This is the same version that is being used on the
Digipak and acts as the artist's logo, connecting the products together.
We are waiting on the front cover to be created. When we have it, it will make up the banner at the top with promotion for the EP.
There is also now an empty space next to the Soundcloud player that we feel needs to be filled. We are thinking of creating a news story to fill up this space and this is something we will try and do next time. When we come back to working on the website, we hope to get it finished.

Filming Session 7 (30th January)

Today we filmed the last of our footage in the Great Hall at our school. As we ware permitted to be in there unsupervised, after much hassle, we managed to have time in there to film by ourselves. Ben, Josh and I had bought our costumes for the performance shots along with all of our props such as guitars, and microphone/stand. We began by doing close-ups of me singing the song, then did interesting angles around us as a trio to show us performing as a band. The shots taken were good but we had some difficulty with the lighting as it came out very dark on camera as all of the natural light wasn't great for filming. With this footage, we can now begin editing without having to film more shots looming over us.

Editing (3rd February)

03/02/14 - Starting Edit

Today we started the edit for our music video. We started by organizing all our footage and uploaded all of it to Premiere Pro 64. We decided on which shot we wanted to use for the intro as we had multiple shots of Josh and Ben strumming the acoustic guitar. We ended up choosing to open with a pan of the guitar and then  and we finished editing up to around 2 -3 bars into the first verse.

Tabitha

Website (5th February)

Today me and Josh have added the Digi pack front cover to the banner on the website. This helps to promote the artists music, as well as linking our media products with each other. We also added a news story, where Passenger has mentioned the artist Simon Stirling, in a tweet. We thought this would be a good addition to the website because it helps to link in with social media and the artist Passenger has the same target audience and music genre that we are aiming at. We also decided to add this as there was an empty space next to the soundcload player and we didn't want to leave this blank. We also added boarders around the tour dates, to make them stand out a bit more and help to make the website look a bit more organized. After applying these changes, we have decided that our website now looks professional enough to be published and to represent the artist positively and effectively.

06/02/14 - 22/2/14 - Continuing Editing

Over the past few weeks we have been editing our music video using Adobe's Premier Pro 64 software. We began by importing the WAV file for the audio of the song San Diego. Then we imported all of the shots that we took whilst filming. Once, these were in, we watched them all, and separating them into shots we will use and shots we will not (due to either lighting issues, canted angles etc.) and set foot with the footage that was appropriate for the music video. We roughly ordered the footage as we knew roughly where each shot would be used in terms of narrative. This made it a lot easier because we were able to then tell the story of the video from the ordered shots. The performance shots were then placed in between the narrative scenes appropriately, either where a narrative scene closes or a change in the song occurs.By this point, we had our order well in place to match our storyboard and shot list. From this, we began editing the beginning of the song and decided on using a Fade In to a pan of the guitar playing the intro music. The transition fade was quick as the song doesn't start especially slowly so we didn't have to ease the audience into the video.

Once that was done, we began cropping the footage to the pace of the song as it makes the video look like it fits with the song, whereas editing out of song pace looks uneasy to watch, as we found in our research. This allowed us to have the same timing of shots that was consistent until the pace changed. Two of the shots in the first verse were connoting the 'Then' and 'Now' as the first shot was of myself and Tabitha, and then the second was just myself. To tell the audience this, we placed the 'Then' shot in black & white and cross-dissolved it into the next shot, which made the fluidity of the edit seem much more coherent. We then decided that all shots of a memory or the past would be in black & white as it would maintain a consistency to the edit that the audience would be able to comprehend with. We also used a few more cross-dissolves where those shots were merging into the present day.

I felt this was effective as it stood out to the viewer what was happening, and the fact that the character has left the other, which ties in the song explicitly. Where the song entered the chorus, we sped up the pacing slightly of the editing, so it would maintain some direction and make it feel to the audience that the song was building for something. This added a great mood to the video that complimented the shots and the way they were not only appropriate, but effective for the song. When the pace slowed again, for the second verse, we used an establishing shot to bring in the next chapter and refresh the audience from the quicker pacing back to the original speed. We continued with the shots, keep the consistency as we had so done before in the first verse. After a black & white shot of myself taking a picture of Tabitha on a Polaroid 300 Instant Camera, we cross-dissolved into a rather special shot. It was of the picture just as it came out of the camera (blank white) and we laid it on the grass and filmed it developing for the next 8 minutes until it was complete. We then increased the speed of this shot 6000% to condense it into a few seconds, and it showed the picture going from blank to complete within seconds, which looked great.

We approached the second chorus and sped up the pace again as the song did once before, and repeated the same structure as the first followed but with different shots to maintain interest in the music video. This then led to the bridge which is a lot faster so we sped up the pacing again, showing the audience that this is now the climatic part of the song. The fast speed meant we were using a lot of shots so we were slightly concerned that we wouldn't have enough to sustain the video for the rest of the song. At the bridge ending, we then jump-two shots so they flicked between one other to juxtapose the two different mood; one of myself on my bed, and the other of me falling - as it connoted how I felt about what had happened.

This brought the song to an impressive climax that then flowed into the last chorus, where we continued all the shots and bought the story to the close. This was through using the closing shots of each location as it shows to the audience that the song is ending. We did end up having enough shots to finish the song. For the last shot, we used a colour shot of Tabitha, to show how although she is in his past, she is still alive and present within the main character. |This shots then trailed off upwards whilst going out of focus as the music stopped, and then a fade out completed the song. I was really happy with the edit as I feel it was effective for its genre, audience and everything we intended it to do and be.

However, after receiving some audience feedback on SurveyMonkey, one problem was identified in the edit was we wanted to fix. There was a shot in which a tripod was not used, and it look uneasy and moved about too much. The audience felt it looked out of place. Responding to this, we went back to Premiere Pro and edited this out and replaced a more effective shot in place and the audience agreed that it significantly improved the edit. After this, we exported it and put it on YouTube. As a result of public release, we have received pleasant feedback for the video.

Evaluation - 26/3/14

We all completed our own Prezi's of our personal evaluation of the music video and we felt it had gone. We talked about what was successful and why, and what areas could have been improved on, and why - and what we would then go on to do to solve the problem. Then, we filmed ourselves having a more conversational evaluation of the music video as it was easier to understand as it was less formal dialogue than the Prezi's, as we were able to give our opinion of different sections of the video, and then all talk about it together. It worked effectively and we covered several success and improvement criterias. I then uploaded this footage onto Premiere Pro and edited it with title screens asking questions and us answering them. I cut out parts of the evaluation that were not revelent directly to the purpose, and any parts that were us laughing or being silly. For the title screens, I had one word come in at a time with a corresponding drum beat and I feel that looked professional and effective. Also, I faintly played the song San Diego in the background as it showed what we were talking about and made for a pleasant mood to the edit. I exported this and it is on YouTube.
