Analysis of Survey Results
We created a survey using www.surveymonkey.com and sent it to other people in our class to identify what our target audience thought about music videos.
1. What is your gender?
61.5% were male and 38.5% were female.
2. What is your age?
92.3% were 16-18 and 7.7% were 25+
3. What are your preferred music genres?
53.9% said pop, 61.5% said rock, 30.8% said jazz, 23.1% said folk, 23.1% said hip hop, 30.8% said RnB, 30.8% said alternative and 3 people ticked 'other' saying northen soul, house and anything.
4. Which type of music video is most appealing to you?
15.4% said narrative based, 15.4% said performance based and 69.2% said a combination of both.
5. How often do you watch music videos?
No one said never, 38.5% said sometimes 15.4% said every month, 7.7% said every week and 38.5% said daily.
6. How much would you want the artist/band to be featured in the music video?
46.2% said the main focus, 46.2% partly, 7.7% said a short cameo and no one said not in the video.
7. Have you listened to an artist/band band on the quality of their music video/s?
53.8% said yes and 46.2% said no.
8. Where are you most likely to watch a music video?
100% of people said YouTube.
9. When watching a music video do you like the lyrics to be related to what you are watching?
46.2% said always, 15.4% said never and 38.5% said they don't mind. We were already taking into account the lyrics and we will have to continue this to ensure that we target our audience.
10. On what platform are you most likely to share a music video?
38.5% said Facebook, 23.1% said Twitter, 30.8% said YouTube, 7.7% said Soundcloud and no one said Google+. If we want our music video to be successful and want loads of people to watch it, posting the Youtube video to Facebook would be the best way of distribution.
The majority of people who took our survey were male and were ages 16-18. Though are target audience is mainly female, this is the intended age group for our audience, so we should pay close attention to the results of this survey to tell us what are target audience would like best to see in a music video.
The song we have chosen to make a music video for is a folk/acoustic pop genre. Since 53.9% of people said they liked pop and 23.1% said folk a total of 77% of people should like our chosen song. This shows that the age group of 16-18 is a good choice of target audience for our chosen genre.
We already had an idea of how much performance and narrative we wanted our music video but wanted to include the question in the survey to make sure we were making the right decision. Since the majority chose a combination of both it shows that our first idea is the right one concerning the target audience.
When we asked how often people watch music videos the results showed that no one said never and most people said every week. This is reassurance that people in our target audience and who like our chosen genre, do watch music videos regularly and so would be interested in watching ours.
We asked how much people wanted to see the artist/band featured in the music video because, from our research we know that folk-pop music videos have a wide variety of this. For example, Ben's research of Parachutes by Charlie Simpson shows that it has the artist as the main focus of the video, whereas Give Me Love by Ed Sheeran, from my research, is completely narrative with the artist only appearing as an extra/cameo. 'The Main Focus' and 'Partly' both had the most votes, so we will decide for ourselves which would be best.
When we asked if people had listened to an artists music based on the quality of their music video/s 53.8% said that they had. This tells us that we need to focus on making the video look as professional and high quality as we can if we want more people to take an interest with the artist and listen to their music.
We asked where people are most likely to watch a music video because once the production of the video is finished there are a lot of options for how, and where is best, to distribute it. Because there are always new internet trends for media websites, especially video, it is hard to know where would be the most effective website to use for a teenage target audience. 100% of people chose Youtube, which tells us that it would definitely be the most effective place to distribute the video.
The artist for our chosen song is a 'singer-songwriter' and so, though people will focus on his vocal ability, they will also focus on the lyrics he is writing. Since the lyrics are a big part of the song, we wanted to know if matching the lyrics up to what is happening in the video at the time would be an effective thing to do. The highest vote said they always want the lyrics to be related to the music video, so that is something we will have to take into account when filming it.
Though we have already decided to put the video on Youtube, the way most music videos gain popularity is through people sharing and sending it to friends and family through social networking. This is also probably the fastest way to distribute the video as if one person shares it, three of their friends can share it and so on. The biggest vote was for Facebook, with Youtube not far behind. Once the video is on Youtube, we can all share it on these social networking sites to get people to whatch it and tell all our friends to watch it. This would be the most effective way of getting as many people to watch the video as we can, which could make it a success.
