Music Video One - Lego House by Ed Sheeran

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4BLVznuWnU

This video is influential for ours that we want to make because it demonstrates quite an individual way of showing a narrative. Instead of showing what the song is about, it is made up of a new narrative of the character reflecting on the song, in shots like writing the lyrics and walking whilst singing the song. It is mostly outside which I also like as it creates good lighting and clear, distintive backdrops for the character.

Music Video Two - Keep Your Head Up by Ben Howard

This music video is influential for ours because it shoots everything outdoors, and in shots of nature and sunlight etc. - this suits our genre also because it is calm and acoustic music. The natural lighting makes for a clear imagery and lovely views of countryside-esque shots. We could also take influence from this video the way that the artists is with his friends at the end, using the slide that he built during the video - I think this is a good way of connecting the narrative together.

Music Videos
Ed Sheeran - Give Me Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOjdXSrtUxA

The effective part of the video is that you don't really understand what is happening in the video until halfway through. You realise halfway through that the girl is a cupid-like character making people fall in love when she shoots them with a bow and arrow. Not knowing what is really going on for this amount of time keeps the audience interested and makes them want to keep watching so that they can understand the narrative. Once they understand they have a feeling of accomplishing something and they can enjoy the rest of the video.
One thing I like from this video is that instead of loads of clips of the artist singing, the video has an actual storyline. That way, the audience have to actually focus on the content of the video, making it more enjoyable and captivating. This is something that my group and I will use in our music video.

Billy Lockett - Hard Man http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BSPoG1UbDY

For me, the most effective part of the video is the lighting used. The whole video is set in a forest and having not very much lighting really compliments the setting and gives the video a certain atmosphere. This atmosphere also suites the music and the lyrics well, which is something my group will aim to do with our music video.
The composition of the video also matches the story of the video. The story of the video is that a woman is following a man through a forest and the man trying to get away from her. At the beginning you cannot really tell what is going on and the actor looks lost. The canted and obstructed angle shots involve the audience with the story and make them feel like they are lost and confused. In the second half of the video it is more clear what is going on in the video and the shots are more regular.

Parachutes by Charlie Simpson

Hopeless Wanderer by Mumford & Sons

The text is very effective in my opinion, because the video has famous Hollywood actors playing the parts of the members of the band. At first, this is hidden from the audience, with clever shots of the actors silhouetted
against the sun, or just having brief cuts over the actors without revealing who it is, which makes it seem like it's the band members at first.
There is very little narrative, because the point of the video is that the audience is hooked by the fact that very famous actors are playing the parts, instead of the band members. The music video is comedic in places, such as when Jason Bateman starts "playing" the banjo solo, and smoke starts coming off of his fingers.

A Team by Ed Sheeran

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAWcs5H-qgQ

The text is effective because it demonstrates a narrative that links to the story the song tells. I like how the lyrics of the song fit in with the imagery as it creates a clear story. For the audience, it is almost like we are watching the woman’s life.

Another aspect of the video that I think is effective is how people in the target audience may be able to relate to the type of situation the woman in the music video is in as many people have dark times throughout their life. People may also feel sorry for the woman, which creates a sympathy factor.

The music video for ‘A Team’ influences me because it shows me that I don’t need to create something really complicated to come out with a successful music video. It also influences me and helps me because it shows how much of an impact the storyline of my music video will have on the audience.  I like how the music video is set outside because I think it compliments the music genre as it is very aucoustic and earthy.

Volcano by Damien Rice:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZduDvIBu3EU

I like this music video because it is very simple. The music video is set in a recording studio and is in black and white. I think that this is effective because we get to see the the musicians emotions through the facial exopressions they are making while singing the song in the studio.

I also like the black and white effect because it coveys a calm and relaxed mood, which fits well with the genre of music this song is in. This can help me with my music video because it has showed me that the mood of the music video can easily be changed by the colours and brightness etc of the image. Because the song I am planning to use is quite mellow and sad, I might decide to use dull lighting or lighting with a cool tone to convey the mood of the song to the sudience.

Another aspect of the music video that inspires me is how it is set in a rcording studio. Although I feel like a weakness of the video is that it can get a bit boring towards the end, as all we see are different shots of the musicians singing and playing their instruments in the studio. However I do really like how we can see the emotions of the people when playing the song as I think it contributes well to the narrative of the song.

Artist Website Research

Kodaline Website

The website for band, Kodaline, is aestethically basic but has everything a viewer would need to find what they want about the band. The header of buttons located at the top of the website makes for clear and easy navigation around the site, showing to the audience what they want can be accessed easily, from tour dates to t-shirts. I think having a website simply made does make it easier for navigation purposes, but does compromise with how it looks. Their logo of the name 'Kodaline' is written clearly and boldly at the top just below the navigation bar, in black letters against a white background. I think this is effective for drawing the attention to the bands brand and if the viewer isn't a fan, they will immediately become informed of the bands name and image.

Hudson Taylor Website

The website for two-brother duo, Hudson Taylor is less simple than what the above website goes for. It does feature a navigation bar which does promote easy functioning for the viewer. Also, they similarly have a bold-looking header of their name which is effective. Being quite a small-scale duo, they are encouraging people to share their music so they have embedded buttons to share the music to other social netowrk sites like Facebook, Twitter etc. This is an effective way of getting the music broadly heard by different audiences.

Ben Howard Website - http://www.benhowardmusic.co.uk/

The most effective part of the website is definitely the embedded video that appears behind the news headers, in the middle of the screen. Most websites don't have a video like this that isn't attached to a video sharing website such as Youtube. The video depicts similar images to the recognisable front cover of Ben Howards latest album and is therefore able to promote the album. Having an image of the album cover as one of the first things you see is something my group and I will use on our website.
Another effective feature of the website is the layout of it. The first thing you see on the website, in front of the video, is links to news concerning the artist. People who are purposely going on the Ben Howard website will already be fans of him and his music. This way, the majority of people who go on his website will be interested in news surrounding him and will benefit from this kind of layout.
The text used on the website is bold and clear making it easy for people to read information about the artist and navigate around the website. This is an important feature for anyone who likes the artist but doesn't have the best eyesight. Having text that is hard to read is something that me and my group will try to avoid.

Ryan Keen Website - http://www.ryankeen.co.uk/

On this artists website the banner is very eye catching. The main colour of the website is black, making the colourful banner stand out amongst everything. Also, because of its position on the website, it is the first thing people see on every part of the website. The image on the banner is similar to the one seen on the album cover, therefore it is effective in promoting the artist name and the album.
The banner tells you what options there are for buying his music. Instead of just telling you to pre-order the album, it tells you that you can buy it in 'Limited Edition Vinyl LP'. It also tells you where to pre-order an exclusive t-shirt. The website gives you all these options so that it targets different audiences. If there is someone who likes his music but prefers to listen to vinyl then he can still buy Ryan Keen's music.
On the music page of the navigation bar, it is made very easy to listen to his music via Soundcloud. Without leaving the website you can listen to both of his EPs with no trouble. The navigation system simplifies everything for the audience and just makes looking at the website easier.

The Lumineers

The Lumineers' website is a very simple website with the colour scheme of white black and grey. I believe that they have chosen this colour scheme because it is very simple, and reflects their music which is also fairly simple.
They have their music on the right side of the website home page so that you can listen to the music while you are on their website, and underneath that it has multiple links to external websites where you can purchase the music.

Passenger

Passenger's website is very colourful, with a painting of a night sky as the background.
The largest thing that can be seen on the home page is a picture of merchandise, in this case a shirt, which could indicate that he is a very popular artist who has a lot of fans that would be interested in buying his merchandise, which is why they are on his website. On the flip-side, it could show that he is a more money-grabbing artist who isn't that interested in his fans, and more interested in lining his wallet with the fan's cash.

Jason Mraz.com

http://jasonmraz.com/

This image is of the homepage on the Jason Mraz website. I like the very earthy tones and colours used because it creates a natural look about the website. As a lot of Jason Mrazs songs are acoustic, I think that this website suits the genre very well.
I trink that this theming of the website is effective because it appeals to a wide range of the target audience. Jason Mrazs target audience is mostly teenagers and young adults, so I think that the theme is appropriate as it is not to young looking or old fashioned.
The banner is of Jason Mraz playing with a group of acoustic guitar players and is advertising for a new album.
The website features a navigation bar right at the top, which could be bolder, but provides links to all the other pages on the website, which is very useful in letting the viewer explore the website.
The homepage also features news about upcoming tours and news about the artist, which I feel is a very important aspect  for an artists homepage as it is what the fans want to know about. I also like how there is a feed showing the artists instagram, twitter and other social network links as it is also a good tool for letting fans know updates on what Jason Mraz is doing.
However I think the title of the website could be a bit bigger and bolder because it doesnt stand out as  much as it could againsed the background. Aspecially where there are clouds in the background it is hard to see the title clearly as well because it is white.

Nina Nesbitt.com

http://www.ninanesbittmusic.com/

This image shows the homepage of the Nina Nesbitt website. This website has quite a different look to the Jason Mraz website as even though the music genre is similar (Acoustic singer songwriter), this website has a plain white background but incorpirates a few bright colours, mostly on the banner. I like the layout of this page because it is very spaced out and simple and  the headings clearly separate each section.
I also like how the artists name is very bold as it is in a dark grey and is in a thick font. This is a factor that I would like to incorpirate in my website because I want the artists name to be clear and stand out. This homepage helps to promote the Artists new single as thew banner says the name of the new single and 'Buy now on Itunes'. This banner has a link directly to where you can purchase the single, which I think is a clever way of getting people to buy it. This is also affective as many of the people veiwing this website would be fans of Nina nesbitt, meaning that they would reguraly check the website for updates on her music.
There is a clear navigation bar at the top of the page. I like how it is simple and stands out as the purple strip looks very bold in front of the white background. this makes it really easy for the viewer to find what they want to see on the website.
The look of the homepage is also effective because it uses bright, fun colours which would appeal to the target audience (mostly teenage girls). Another feature that targets the audience is the social network links. As many of her target audience use social networks, this is an effective way of getting fans to keep up to date with her latest music and tours.

We Sing, We Dance We Steal THings - Jason Mraz --->

Olly Murs - Olly Murs

Front Cover
The best thing about this album artwork is the use of colours. Because the pictures themselves have a black and white effect on them, the test 'Olly Murs' stands out very well to the audience. Another feature that makes the text stand out is the font used. The font is big, bold and easy to read and with both that and the stand out colour, there's no way you can't see it. As this is a self-titled album having the text stand out so much promotes both the artist and the album. Also, this is a debut album so it is like an introduction to the artist. Having the artist name as the stand out thing on the cover makes more people remember his name and therefore is a good way to promote the artist.

Back Cover
There is not much to say about the back cover as it is very conventional and doesn't have anything except the tracklisting. It follows the black and white colour scheme from the album cover. I think having such a bland empty back cover doesn't add anything good to the digipak. Having a boring back cover is something that i think my group will try and avoid when making our digipak.
